Sharon’s expertise includes argument resolution, and helping and educating couples on how to survive an affair and recover from the infidelity, with special emphasis on teaching couples how to build a strong relationship foundation so that the chance of an affair ever happening is greatly minimized. In addition, because Facebook is cited in 1 out of every 5 divorces in the United States, Sharon educates couples on the dangers of Facebook (and other social media outlets) on their primary relationships, distinguishing curiosity from cheating, and what to do if a significant other crosses the Facebook line.

Sharon Rivkin, M.A., M.F.T., argument and affairs expert and licensed marriage family therapist in Santa Rosa, California for over 30 years, is author of Breaking the Argument Cycle: How to Stop Fighting Without Therapy, a comprehensive, step-by-step guide and workbook on argument resolution, that outlines Sharon’s groundbreaking three-step method that transformed Sharon’s life and the lives of hundreds of couples that she has counseled in her private practice.

In her book and workbook, Sharon outlines the First Argument Technique, a three-step system for argument resolution that uses a couple’s first argument as the source for uncovering critical information from their childhood that can break the argument cycle and ultimately save a marriage that’s in danger of collapsing. Her book shows that what you DON’T know about arguing can ruin your marriage, and how, in three crucial steps, a couple can end their relationship battles, rewrite the script of their marriage, affair-proof their relationship, and turn arguments into their best friend.

Sharon received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Boston University and a Masters of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Sonoma State University in Cotati, California. Prior to opening her private therapy practice, Sharon supervised MFT interns, and under this position, was consultant on patient cases, treatment plans, and case presentations. She was also director of the Learning Skills Program at Santa Rosa Junior College, in Santa Rosa, California, a program that served learning disabled and head-injured adults. Under her directorship, Sharon created a highly acclaimed specialized counseling class for parents of the adult students. Sharon was also an advisor to the staff in matters relating to program development, treatment planning, and in-service training. She taught classes in Diagnostic Testing, Study Skills, Reading, Writing, Interpersonal Counseling, and Guidance; and developed curriculum for Interpersonal Counseling and Guidance classes. Sharon also served as community liaison with county agencies serving adolescents and adults, and helped develop intake manual and procedures for treatment review and was instrumental in designing an internship training program.

An experienced public speaker and educator, Sharon also leads continuing education workshops on her First Argument Technique, teaching marriage family therapists how to utilize the First Argument Technique in their therapy practices to quickly diagnose (oftentimes within the first ½ hour of the session) the core issues of their client(s) and immediately begin a practical treatment plan that their clients can implement as soon as they leave the session.

Sharon is an active member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, an organization dedicated to advancing the profession as an art and a science, and maintaining high standards of professional ethics.

Sharon specializes in individuals and couples counseling in Santa Rosa, California, with special emphasis on argument resolution and affairs in marriage. She is married to Michael Howard and is the mother of two grown daughters, Talia and Tashina Kilburn.
